in the eight - year cycle of a class teacher, few are more challenging than the science main lessons of the 6th, 7th, and
8th grades.
To measure gains
in student achievement, we calculate the difference between
8th -
grade performance
in each
subject and the performance level that would have been expected based on performance
in both
subjects in 4th
grade.
NAEP provides statewide data on six
subjects (4th - and
8th -
grade exams
in math, science, and reading).
Two completed teacher surveys are available for 21,324 of the
8th -
grade students — a bit smaller than the full sample of NELS students because some teachers did not complete their questionnaires and some students did not have a class
in one or both of the academic
subjects randomly assigned to their school for which teacher surveys were administered.
Federal law also mandates the periodic administration of tests
in selected
subjects to a representative sample of students
in 4th and
8th grade as part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often called «the nation's report card.»
But preliminary findings from the study also found that students» achievement
in most
subjects increased substantially between
8th grade and 10th
grade.
For the analysis, released last week by the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University
in Bloomington, researchers analyzed data stretching back as far as 1996 from 4th and
8th grade reading and math tests administered by the National Assessment of Educational Progress and from state assessments
in those
subjects.
