Unfortunately, if you want to use your points to book American Airlines flights, you can't
transfer Ultimate Rewards points directly into American
AAdvantage miles.
If you have a Starwood Preferred Guest account, then you could earn bonus
miles simply for
transferring some points to your
AAdvantage account.
When we looked at an example
transfer ratio for points, we found you can get 1,500
AAdvantage miles for 10,000 Honors points.
Every
transfer of 20,000 Starpoints to your American
AAdvantage account earns you a bonus of 5,000
miles.
While SPG point
transfers are the best option if you have loads of SPG points, since you receive a 5000
mile bonus when
transferring increments of 20,000 SPG points, you can
transfer other hotel points to AA
miles, which may be worthwhile if you have a ton of these points or just need to slightly top up your
AAdvantage account to redeem for an award.
This is a good card for those who want to earn
AAdvantage miles (because Ultimate Rewards points don't
transfer to American).
Cardholders will typically get a better deal through the ThankYou Travel Center than by
transferring points to American and redeeming
AAdvantage miles directly with the airline.
However, when you
transfer 20,000 SPG points to American
AAdvantage, you will receive a bonus of 5,000

One of our favorites ways to earn American
AAdvantage miles is by
transferring SPG Starpoints earned through of one of the Starwood Preferred Guest credit cards from American Express.
You could use American
AAdvantage miles from your Aviator Red Card and book a partner award through AA, or you could
transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to British Airways and book Cathay through BA.
Assuming we could find a routing that is acceptable, be it direct Toronto to Chicago or be it Toronto to New York to Miami to Dallas to Chicago, this roundtrip would cost 25K RBC Rewards + $ 50 in taxes and fees if we were to

transfer partner of Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG), and they also have co-branded cards provided by Citi that earn
AAdvantage miles directly.
