As well as
the AEA staff, JET has about 150 Commission workers and 350 contractors.

The
AEA has always maintained that its JET
staff are paid fairly compared with its other workers.
In 1992, an inquiry requested by the MEPs proposed two solutions: either give all workers at JET a Commission contract, or convince the
AEA to give its
staff more money while at the same time persuading the Commission to give preferential treatment to British
staff applying for jobs on other European projects.
But PA said that Pounds Sterling 32 million could be saved by cancelling the transfer, closing the laboratory and transferring some
staff to
AEA Technology.
Last month, the DTI announced that it would close Warren Spring and transfer most
staff to
AEA Technology, another government laboratory at Harwell, in Oxfordshire.
However, PA also pointed out that transferring Warren Spring
staff to
AEA Technology would reduce competition for government contracts in environmental research.
More importantly, says John Billard of the IPMS, the union that represents
staff at JET, the
AEA workers have no guarantee of jobs after JET closes.
But in May a secret review of the move commissioned by the department concluded that it would be cheaper to close the laboratory, sack half the
staff and transfer the rest to
AEA Technology, the government laboratory at Harwell, Oxfordshire.
