It was a little surprising to see the
AFT take a stand against the edTPA teacher licensing test
given President Randi Weingarten's support for similar «bar exams» for teachers, and it got me thinking about «professionalizing» teaching in general.
Given the role of NEA and
AFT affiliates as prime campaign financiers of state legislative campaigns, along with the fact that districts are often the centers of political power in southern states, the federal lever is critical to advancing systemic reform.
Given the
AFT's longstanding efforts to co-opt progressive groups,
AFT will likely
give even more money to Democracy Alliance this fiscal year.
Now that the NEA and
AFT can count on Schwarzenegger's successor (and once - and - future governor) Jerry Brown and the state legislature to be at their proverbial beck - and - call (and the
AFT now assured of a majority on L.A. Unified's board), Supt. John Deasy has had to roll back efforts to expand choice and has had to hope on lawsuits by reformers to
give him the edge in revamping the district's woeful teacher evaluation system.
Then there's also state laws forcing districts to bargain with NEA and
AFT locals; the collective bargaining laws, along with the campaign dollars the two unions deploy, essentially
give union bosses a level of influence over districts that supersedes that of the voting public.
Another flaw with
AFT's proposal is «that a teacher could not show up for weeks,
give no excuse, and still wait out a 100 day hearing process, collecting pay all the while, and still might not be let go.»
The
AFT also
gave $ 200,000 to the Clinton Global Initiative, which is the other non-explicitly political wing of the Clinton family's always - political efforts.
So expect Emanuel to push the
AFT hard on traditional teacher compensation, especially
given that the three - to - four percent annual pay hikes the union has demanded and received is one culprit in the massive underfunding.
And this report did
give the
AFT and The Times the opportunity to mutter dark insinuations about how the federal government has «repeatedly delayed» the release of the charter - school results.

From where Casey sits, the criticism of Brown and others about the unwillingness of the
AFT to embrace any reform of the obsolete process for teacher dismissals — including the Big Apple affiliate's successful opposition to Bloomberg's effort this year to
give the city's schools chancellor final say over dismissing those alleged and convicted of criminal misconduct (and those engaged in inappropriate behavior with students)-- amounts to» a vicious slander» geared to «chip away at public support for the due process rights» and to «distract» people from the city's failures to put more effort into firing such teachers.

AFT money — and that both unions are pushing their vassals to embrace their so - called social justice efforts — it wouldn't be shocking if the outfits merely signed what the two unions placed before them.

gave $ 71,410 to Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the organization that defends the poor practices of ed schools, during its 2017 fiscal year.
In 2010, the Gates Foundation

Given the presence of these groups, along with the presence of Alliance for Educational Justice (another group backed by
AFT), it is little wonder why so much of the «manifesto» focuses on opposing choice and Parent Power, as well as calling for districts to stop hiring recruits trained by Teach For America, the teacher quality reform outfit that has long been the bane of the Big Two's existence.
To that end,
AFT CT is interviewing politicians before
giving endorsements for the fall.
While friends can disagree on even the most important issues, it is shameful that Malloy's challengers weren't
given the opportunity to make their case to
AFT members as to why students, parents, teachers and all of public education would be better off with a new governor,» Pelto concluded.
The traditional district bureaucracies, often influenced by NEA and
AFT locals through campaign donations, that do everything possible to oppose Parent Trigger measures and other tools that
give black families lead decisionmaking roles in the schools that serve their children.

The closer you look at the list of signatories, the more you realize that Journey for Justice is just another
AFT front group for the union's other villeins,
