ALEC bills also allow schools to loosen standards for teachers and administrators, exclude students with physical disabilities and special educational needs, eschew collective bargaining, and experiment with other pet causes like merit pay, single - sex
education, school uniforms, and political and religious indoctrination of students.

In many cases, the anti-public school, pro-cyber school legislation was a result of aggressive lobbying and political involvement by the American Legislative Exchange Council (
ALEC) and the member of its Digital Learning Subcommittee, a group of
education reform entrepreneurs that includes K12 Inc..
At the annual conservative American Legislative Exchange Council (
ALEC) meeting this year, Dr. Steve Perry — a liberal charter school leader and passionate educational choice advocate — spoke about the poor state of K — 12
education for families of color and those in poverty and inspired the audience with his ideas on how to bridge the political divide to advance universal educational choice.
He also serves on NCSL's State Policy and Research for Early
Education (SPREE) Working Group as well as a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (

ALEC to make it easier for cyber charters, including K12 Inc., to expand nationally.
In 2008, the Show - Me Institute released a «policy study» titled «The Fiscal Effects of a Tuition Tax Credit Program in Missouri,» and that same year, Jones introduced a tuition tax credit bill titled the «Children's
Education Freedom Act,» which reflected the
ALEC «Great Schools Tax Credit Act.»
It is a member of
ALEC, and many of the
education initiatives it promotes appear to have their roots in
ALEC «model» legislation, such as tuition tax credits, parent trigger legislation, and attacks on union rights.
Together, Jones and the Show - Me Institute — backed with Sinquefield cash, and using
ALEC model legislation — have pushed an
education privatization agenda in the state.
State Representative Chris Taylor, a Democrat from Madison, just got back from another American Legislative Exchange Council conference, and concluded: «The issue of the moment for
ALEC is public
education — that is, undermining it.»
They are heavily funded by a handful of millionaires and billionaires and passed through groups like Stand for Children,
ALEC, Democrats for
Education Reform, and 50CAN, who use their funding to advocate for privatization, for high - stakes testing, for evaluating teachers by test scores, and for stripping teachers of any due process so that experienced teachers may easily be replaced by newcomers who will work at entry - level wages and leave without ever collecting a pension.
Members and supporters of PAA affiliate MecklenburgACTS will spend Friday, May 11, calling attention to the destructive
education legislation that
ALEC has promoted, legislation that increases high - stakes testing, promotes school vouchers and online charter schools and undercuts the teaching profession.
While Rhee's influence — or at least her starpower — has receded somewhat, the reach of
ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) and Charles and David Koch continues to extend far and wide across the
education spectrum.
