On the other hand, one part of this change that really stings is the loss of
the ANA search tool.

Garuda is the only non-Star Alliance partner that is able to be
searched on
ANA's site.
The biggest advantage to
searching the
ANA website is that it usually shows all of the alliance partners (with some exception mentioned below), which is very handy for airlines like Singapore Airlines which don't usually show up on United or Aeroplan.
Thankfully both
ANA and United are Star Alliance members, so all I needed to do was find what routes they fly the 787 and
search for availability.
If you want to book a partner award
search on either United or
ANA's website, then call in to complete the booking.
To get started on
searching for rewards on
ANA, make sure you select «Award Booking» in the bottom right corner when you input your
search criteria.
The functionality of the
search tool isn't bad but note that you can only
search for round - trip or multiple - segment trips — you can not
search ANA for one way reward flight any longer.
ANA's
search feature is great when it works but many times it's a PIA with its incessant error messages.

searches to routings via Australia and Asia that involve other partners.
One thing to keep in mind is that
ANA won't always show you the partners available for booking, so you sometimes you'll need to
search United and Aeroplan for flights to Bangkok and then call up
ANA to locate the partner award seats.
If you're interested in
ANA flights, try using United, Aeroplan, or
ANA's website to
search for open awards and then you'll have to call in to book them with Virgin Atlantic.
Because
ANA doesn't display them,
search for these on the United website and then call
ANA to book an international partner award.
You can
search awards for most of these airlines on the websites of United, Air Canada or
ANA.
One last thing before you start
searching: make sure you are familiar with the
ANA Mileage Club routing rules.
One of the key benefits of the
ANA website is that you can
search for every Star Alliance partner, including Singapore Airlines (which United excludes).
Because you'll actually book your award with
ANA, I recommend using this website to
search, too.
I find Aeroplan and
ANA to have some of the best
search function for Star Alliance redemptions, or Lifemiles, and British Airways Avios page is usually top notch for OneWorld awards, especially when
searching trips by individual segments.
For travel on United Airlines and its partners, I recommend using United, Aeroplan, and
ANA to
search for award space.
If you only
search on Aeroplan or
ANA, you won't have a full picture of the Singapore Airlines award availability for Singapore Airlines members.
Due to this issue, I often
search segment by segment on other airline webpages such as Air Canada Aeroplan,
ANA, British Airways, etc..
ANA's award
search engine probably won't be necessary if you feel comfortable using United and Aeroplan, but it does still have a couple of strengths that are worth noting.
Luckily I have, but only after playing extensively with whatever remnants of their used - to - be-great
search engine
ANA had left intact.
