So my itinerary was SNA - SJC on Southwest sing Southwest points I earned from a credit card bonus, then SJC - NRT on
ANA's 787 in their new staggered Business Class.
So far I haven't found an example of non-alliance award space on
ANA's website.
I'm in Orange County, CA,

ANA flight from SJC - NRT was a logical choice, with a positioning flight to get from SNA - SJC.
Thankfully both
ANA and United are Star Alliance members,
so all I needed to do was find what routes they fly the 787 and search for availability.
I just
so happened to be taking a picture right when my
ANA 787 was landing and took a few more as it pulled up to the gate.
ANA allows you to view the final fees and mile requirements even if you don't have the requisite miles to complete the booking,
so it's easy to see exactly how much you'd pay were you to book through
ANA.
Good news:
ANA is a partner in the Star Alliance,
so United MileagePlus members will be able to earn and burn miles on the route.
The redemption through
ANA Mileage Club will be significantly lower,
so check that sweet spot if you have enough
ANA miles.
However, if you're considering transferring your Membership Rewards to Aeroplan, I'd definitely reconsider and think about using those miles to book via
ANA since the deals to southern South America can be
so much sweeter.
Like,
ANA Korean Air also does not allow for one - way awards,
so you'll have to be booking a round trip.
United will not allow you to route through Europe, the Middle East, or Africa, to New Zealand (or Australia),
so you'll be primarily looking at bookings through Asia with Star Alliance partners, such as
ANA, Singapore, etc..
You can't book
ANA awards via Virgin Atlantic's website and you can't even search for them
so you have to look to other Star Alliance sites for help.
ANA is a transfer partner of American Express and Starwood's Starpoints convert to
ANA miles as well (both convert at a 1:1 ratio)
so there are ample opportunities for anyone wishing to build up a balance of miles with
ANA.
so it's time to look elsewhere and elsewhere means
ANA.
I find
ANA's website a bit clunky
so my go - to sites are Aeroplan or United which are both easy to use and quite reliable when it comes to showing true award availability.
