The rules section for «transfer partners» on

website is a little unclear but after playing around with bookings on the
website and calling in to verify, I realized that the below rules apply to both
ANA bookings and bookings with Star Alliance partners
I received my confirmation email shortly after booking, and used the confirmation number to choose my seats on both
ANA's
website and United's.
In the end,
ANA's own
website says it shouldn't be there.
ANA has one of the best
websites to find awards flights for Star Alliance partners, but it's a bit tricky to use.
Use the
websites of some of their partners (
ANA for Star Alliance or British Airways site for oneworld) to find the award space, and then call in to American or United to book the award.

The best way to see availability for Star Alliance partner's is to use either
ANA's
website (which is pretty complicated but gives the best results) or United's (which is much simpler but isn't quite as comprehensive).
