They have no other short - term strategic aim (and no medium - term one either, given

For all these reasons, I think
AV is actually a very good voting system and I would put the
referendum result down to several things — an ineffective Yes campaign (if you typed
AV into Google, they didn't even come up on the first page of
results), lies and smears spread by the No campaign, the association with Nick Clegg, the split in Labour over
AV and finally, and not insignificantly, the fact that the Electoral Commission sent leaflets to every household containing an overly complex explanation that made
AV look more complex than the insides of a nuclear reactor.
We were given the opportunity to adopt the
AV system in a 2011
referendum, yet it was decisively rejected, with 68 % of voters opting for No on a 42 % turnout, in part the
result of the abject failure of electoral reform advocates to craft a convincing case in favour of change.
In the medium term, the Labour Party will be reinvigorated with a new leader and there is every possibility that the
AV referendum will

So what will I do when I finally vote in the
referendum on May 5th where on the one hand we have the incumbent First Past the Post System which we know at a national level to be unrepresentative and unfair as it returns governments with overwhelming majorities in the House of Commons even though they only have forty per cent of the vote or less, or
AV which is not a representative system but more complicated with it's opaque
results making it more open to election fraud or the suspicion of.
