The two strongest
contenders for Best Supporting
Actress are Lupita Nyong «o, the frontrunner, and her challenger, Jennifer Lawrence, who steals American Hustle right out from under everyone else in the film.
But it took not just best foreign language film (over the more politically safe Toni Erdmann) but also best
actress for Isabelle Huppert: now a major Oscar
contender, leaving both previous frontrunners (Natalie Portman and Emma Stone), fretting into their frocks.
A ton will depend on if Reese Witherspoon is a true
contender in Best
Actress, but if she is, Dern could certainly wind up along
for the ride as well.
The point I keep coming to is that, yeah, if everything is seen through the prism of what makes an Oscar
contender (which is, frankly, such a manipulative pursuit it shouldn't be the gauge), then yeah, maybe a case can be made
for a «weak» year
for lead
actresses.
It seems highly likely that Thompson will end up as a lead
contender for Best
Actress.»
