After the initial browning, most other recipes called for
braising the
chicken over low heat and I wanted to avoid deep frying so I
added those steps.

TIP: As an alternate cooking method, after browning
chicken,
add the ingredients to a large Dutch oven and
braise at 350 °F (177 °C) for about 1 1/2 hours or until tender.

My Mom's version, saute the cabbage with onion in olive oil, then
add a tsp of celery seed with
chicken broth and
braise 30 min and finish with a tbl of butter (or more:), salt and pepper to taste.
The flavors mixed very nicely, and I
added a tablespoon each of cider vinegar and
chicken stock to the
braise.
