I don't know if... there are ones that are out there already from companies like Belkin and Mophie that use this Qi charging
standard, and it's just like a flat mat, but the Apple one, the
AirPower one, happens to be a little bit bigger, because their positioning is that you can fit your phone, your watch and, what was the third thing?
Unfortunately, it sounds like Apple's
AirPower solution won't arrive until 2018, since Apple must first work with the regulatory committee that oversees the Qi wireless charging
standard to implement a new
standard it developed for
AirPower.
Apple has announced that it is working with Qi to make
AirPower into the
standard, and so we'll have to wait until next year to get the
AirPower Charger.
It's important to note that while all three 2017 iPhones do pack Apple's own take on wireless charging in the form of
AirPower and «Resonant» charging, they also support the
standard Qi wireless, which means any Qi wireless charger you may have will work with it.
Lucky for us, it adheres to the Qi -
standard, which means you can pair it up with any of your certified charging pads, or if you must, pair it up with Apple's own
AirPower mat.
Apple gave event attendees a brief demo of the
AirPower at its event on Tuesday, and said it's working with Qi to incorporate the new charging hardware into the
standard.
And, because it is
standards compliant,
AirPower should also charge other Qi - compatible smartphones, too.
So, at some point next year, Apple will release a new charging
standard called
AirPower.
Plux uses a
standard USB - C cable, and unlike
AirPower, it has a kickstand so you can charge your devices upright.
Instead, Apple has made some of its own improvements to Qi charging
standard and incorporated them into
AirPower.
AirPower works with Qi charging technology, the leading wireless charging
standard on the market.
Apple plans to work with the Qi
standards team to bring
AirPower's features to other charging solutions in the future, Schiller said.
AirPower, Apple's wireless charging
standard, allows you to charge multiple devices at one time, meaning a 2017 or newer iPhone, an Apple Watch, and even AirPods, thanks to a promised wireless charging case.
All three of its latest iPhones support the
standard, and the upcoming wireless charging case for the AirPods, along with its own
AirPower wireless charging pad, will support Qi alone.
