My Amex Platinum card covers my Global Entry fee, my American
Airlines status gets me all the benefits that this card offers on the airline and I have a number of other cards that offer most of the other benefits that this card does.

Unlike other hotel co-branded credit cards, you won't
get Gold
status as a cardmember unless you charge $ 30,000 on your card annually, but the flexibility of the program to cash in your points for
airline miles with a bonus of 5,000 miles for every 20,000 points redeemed makes it more than worth it — even if you don't frequent Starwood properties.
Co-branded
airline cards can also be a great way to
get status faster.

The
airline's Mileage Plan MVPs, Golds and Gold 75K elite members can
get free upgrades to Premium Class seats when they book, or up to 24 hours before departure, depending on their
status level and the fare class they booked.
Depending on the level, elite
status can mean seat upgrades, access to the
airline's club lounges (where you can
get free food and beverages), waived baggage fees, shorter lines at check - in and faster boarding.
With MileagePlus imposing a revenue component on elite
status, this is one way to improve your travel experience and
get perks reserved for elite members without having to focus all of your travel onto one
airline.
For those not having lounge access courtesy of
airline status there's always the option of Priority Pass membership which, at Heathrow T5, will
get you into the Aspire Lounge (which I don't particularly like but is better than nothing) and the soon - to - be-opened Plaza Premium Lounge which, I'm hoping, will be an excellent option for those without access to the British Airways lounges.
One word of caution: If you already have
status with another
airline for 2016 I wouldn't go for a
status match with Virgin America unless you're sure you're going to do at least some flying with them (and therefore
get some benefit from the
status).
Flights on partner
airlines usually count toward elite
status, which starts
getting you perks such as upgrades and free checked bags.
Elite
status used to be almost exclusively the provenance of business travelers, who would easily
get it by flying the required miles on their favorite
airline.
Alaska is one of the few
airlines that will offer you the chance to
get your
status matched from other major
airlines like United, American, Delta, etc..
Since your rewards aren't tied to one particular hotel or
airline program, spending extra on this card does not
get you or fast - track you to any type of elite
status.
So for example, lets say it takes 20,000 miles to
get to silver
status on an
airline and you have 15,000 and your flight was cancelled and you missed your wedding.
The normal way is to give you one mile for each mile you travel, but some
airlines give you points based on how much you spend and if you earn a certain amount of points / miles then you
get different
status levels.
As things stand, Silver tier members enjoy a few perks that passengers with a similar
status on other
airlines do not
get, like access to Cathay's Business Class lounges.
$ 40,000 was way too much spend to put on this card just to
get the 10,000 EQM (which is why I haven't done it in recent years) and most of the other worthwhile benefits I either
get with my
airline status or with other, cheaper, credit cards that I hold.
When we're all traveling together (usually in Economy Class) I can't
get all of us in to an
airline lounge with my
status (I only
get one guest) but that isn't an issue with Priority Pass lounges.
