When paying for a ticket on an
alliance member you can often credit your miles to another member airline, keeping your miles in one
program, instead of ending up with lots of small
mileage amounts spread across
mileage programs.
It's best to start with one
mileage program in each of the three
alliances: Star Alliance, OneWorld, and SkyTeam.

mileage programs, earning points and airline
alliances.
Delta explains that partner airlines determine how they want to participate with the SkyMiles
program, but it seems that there should be a base level requirement of
mileage earning for

Looks like earning in the Alaska Airlines
Mileage Plan
program gives you a great deal since you can fly many different carriers in difference
Alliances for pretty much less than you would in their own
programs.
However, all three
mileage programs are very different with Delta being the sole carrier that's part of an airline
alliance (SkyTeam).
That said, not all airline
mileage programs are as accepting as others, even within
alliances, so the key is to use the most versatile airline
alliance per airline.
... then you have to do some research as to which partners in the
alliance of that
mileage program do not have significant fuel surcharges to pass on in the first place.
These are the most versatile airline
mileage programs per
alliance I've found through experience — that is, the ones whose miles can be used with partners and redeemed with them too.
Our favorite
mileage programs are AA and United because they allow you to book one way awards and are a great complement to each other because they are part of 2 of the biggest airline
alliances.

alliance has suspended
mileage earning and spending privileges on Airberlin flights for members of other Oneworld airline frequent flyer
programs.)
