Scent hounds are able to follow a game trail using their amazing sense of smell, and include the
American Foxhound, Basenji, Basset Hound, Beagle, Black and Tan Coonhound, Bloodhound, Bluetick Coonhound, Dachshund, English Foxhound, Harrier, Norwegian Elkhound, Otterhound, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Plott, Redbone Coonhound, and the Rhodesian Ridgeback.
The
scent hounds are Basset; Beagle (in two sizes, up - to - 13 inches, and 13 - 15 inches); Black and Tan Coonhound; Bloodhound; Dachsunds (three coats types — wire, smooth, and long — and two sizes — standard and miniature);
American and English Foxhounds; Harrier; Norwegian Elkhound; Otterhound; and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen.
While the Pharaoh
Hound is known by most as a sight
hound the
American Kennel Club also classifies this amazingly graceful dog as a
scent hound and with both of these classifications it makes this dog a particularly good candidate for hunting companionship.
