Inspired by the Neue Sachlichkeit photographers August Sander and Albert Renger - Patzsch, as well by as
vernacular photography, Bernd and Hilla Becher documented vanishing
American and European industrial architecture — blast furnaces, water towers, silos, and the like — cataloguing them by type.
Through an extensive variety of media, including drawing, painting and sculpture, video and
photography, performance, music, and a formidable body of critical writing, Kelley sought to reveal the unexpected connections and contradictions of the
American vernacular.
The book and show unabashedly forced the art world to deal with color
photography, a medium scarcely taken seriously at the time, and with the
vernacular content of a body of photographs that could have been but definitely weren't some average
American's Instamatic pictures from the family album.

vernacular photography since the Fifties, Weinberger captured a young generation of rebels, who were greatly influenced by
