Americans take antidepressants, but these medications can take weeks — and for some patients, months — before they begin to alleviate symptoms.

the Americans taking an antidepressant medication had seen a mental health professional in the past year - making medication their sole route of treatment despite the acknowledgment of mental health as a complex realm that requires multiple care approaches.

Americans take antidepressants more than any other drug, it's not too surprising that veterinarians also prescribe them for their furry patients such as Pet Prozac.

More than 30 million
Americans over the age of 12 are
taking antidepressants, making them the most prescribed class of medication for adults under 45.
And
American mothers are suffering: Brown reports that a quarter of
American women use
antidepressants (up 30 percent in the last decade), and twice as many women as men
take anti-anxiety medication.
Millions of
Americans are prescribed
antidepressants each year, yet it typically
takes weeks for patients to feel any effects.
According to the Mayo Clinic, about 13 % of

take antidepressants.
