From May to September, it's puppy and kitten season, and our team is pushed to their limits
in caring for
sometimes 10 or more new
shelter animals a day while trying to arrange adoption events, transports, medical care, feeding and proper cleaning of kennels, volunteer training, etc..
Comfort items like fleece blankets can have a huge impact on an
animal's ability to adjust or feel comfortable
in a
sometimes - stressful environment, like an
animal shelter.
Nevertheless, the new report is likely to fuel the
sometimes vitriolic debate between environmentalists who see free - roaming domestic cats as an invasive species — superpredators whose numbers are growing globally even as the songbirds and many other
animals the cats prey on are
in decline — and
animal welfare advocates who are appalled by the millions of unwanted cats (and dogs) euthanized
in animal shelters each year.

Cats (and many
animals in general) tend to breed
in warm weather, which means local
animal shelters get flooded with litters,
sometimes accompanied by their moms, but very often orphaned.
What amazed me most when I began to look back at this series, was the intense emotion, dignity and
sometimes humor that I saw
in each face despite the circumstances
in which they were forced to live.Every photograph
in this series was taken while the dog was impounded
in an
animal shelter.
Sometimes sick or injured
animals are off public view when being treated
in the
shelter's medical center or at a local emergency clinic.
For example, many
animal control laws; including those requiring licensing, identification, sterilization, rabies inoculation, leashing
in public places and adequate outdoor
shelter; entail monetary penalties and
sometimes seizure of the
animal with payment of fines as a prerequisite for return to owner.
Plus, even if each puppy / kitten finds an awesome home, they are taking up spots that could be filled by rescued
animals — who are likely just as sweet, funny, and adorable as your pet, and who
sometimes wait
in shelters for years before someone brings them home!
Spend some quality time with your pet or with the pet of a neighbor or a friend;
animal shelters are
sometimes in need of volunteers to walk or play with their rescue pets as well.
Staff make every effort to ensure adoptable
animals are
in good medical health, and will inform adopters about all conditions of which we are aware, but
sometimes something could be missed, or may not present until an
animal is out of the
shelter.
These types of programs exist
in many communities,
sometimes created and operated informally by volunteers and other times by
shelters or
animal control departments within the community.
Hundreds of
animals are placed
in responsible homes each year, and thousands are spayed or neutered at the KENT
Animal Shelter Clinic at low cost or
sometimes free for the public and wellness care such as low cost vaccinations are available
in an effort to allow everyone
in all financial brackets to take care of their pets.
It's true that
sometimes shelters don't have a lot of information to offer about some of the
animals in their care, especially when pets are picked up as strays, but that definitely is not always the case.
