from David Gatten's reflection
on the role of documents and Michael Tracy's secret, worldly recitations to Julia Meltzer and David Thorne's digital archives where images become a fault - line between world
views and hidden narratives.
His work is
on view in a handful of American museums, but most of the 95 paintings and drawings and 33 prints are drawn
from private collectors and the
artist's estate, so this is a unique opportunity to see juxtapositions of his work.
The works
on view at Eleven Rivington have long since distanced themselves
from this beginning, having appeared in an
artist book, then haphazardly rearticulated through three - color process paintings (cyan, yellow, and magenta), scanned and digitally distributed
on his and others tumblr pages, and presently re-photographed through a PDF generating application
on his phone, the images
from which provide the basis for this exhibition.
The works
on view reflect the different approaches to realism deployed by
artists, such as the application of color to imitate skin or flesh, using casts
from real bodies, dressing sculptures in clothing, creating moveable limbs and automated bodies, or incorporating human blood, hair, teeth and bones.
There is a lot of very good work by women
artists on view at MoMA right now, although aside
from Marina Abramovic: The
Artist is Present, you would hardly know about many of these shows
from the signage in the lobby, and certainly would not know to look for or understand the import of some individual installations.
On view in all are a selection of works by Contemporary Cuban
artists donated to the museum by Jorge M. Pérez, the majority
from a recent gift of over 170 pieces, as well as works previously gifted to PAMM in 2012, and several recent acquisitions.
Participants presented some of the most dynamic recent works
from their roster of represented
artists, offering an informed
view on contemporary art making.
