as seen, for instance, in USA Hockey's ban on body checking at the Pee Wee hockey level and below, and limits on full - contact practices instituted at every level
of football, from Pop Warner, to high school, college, and the NFL), will be a conscious one; a decision in which the risks
of participating in a particular sport - provided it is based on the most up - to - date information about those risks and a consideration
of other risk factors that might come into play for their
child, such
as pre-existing learning disabilities (e.g. ADHD), chronic health conditions (e.g., a history
of history
of multiple concussions or seizures, history
of migraines), or a reckless and overly aggressive style
of play - are balanced against the benefits to the
child of participating.

Multiple studies undertaken over many years attest to the effect
of parenting on the development
of children and young people, 1,2 and on their mental3 — 5 and physical health in adult life.6, 7 Good quality, timely support for
parents has now been identified in national and international policy documents
as important for reducing social inequalities in health, 8 preventing mental illness, 9 — 11 and enhancing social and educational development.12
Indeed, Jay Belsky incorporated all
of these risk factors into his process model
of parenting, 11 and data from
multiple studies support links to
child well - being.12 In an experiment on the effectiveness
of a program for low - birth - weight infants, Lawrence Berger and Jeanne Brooks - Gunn examined the relative effect
of both socioeconomic status and
parenting on
child abuse and neglect (
as measured by ratings
of health providers who saw
children in the treatment and control groups six times over the first three years
of life, not by review
of administrative data) and found that both factors contributed significantly and uniquely to the likelihood that a family was perceived to engage in some form
of child maltreatment.13 The link between
parenting behaviors and
child maltreatment suggests that interventions that promote positive
parenting behaviors would also contribute to lower rates
of child maltreatment among families served.

An alternative approach focuses on
children's unmet needs, acknowledging the many possible contributors (e.g., lack
of access to health care),
as well
as parental behaviour.3 The latter approach fits with the developmental ecological perspective which posits that no one factor alone contributes to neglect; there are
multiple and interacting contributors at the level
of the
child,

ECD programmes can take many forms, including promotion
of good health and nutrition, support for safe and stimulating environments, protection from risks such
as violence or abandonment,
parenting support and early learning experiences, media, preschools and community groups.4 Poverty is the key underlying cause
of poor
child development;
children living in poverty are exposed to many negative influences, including poor physical environments, inadequate nutrition, parental stress and insufficient cognitive stimulation.5 Undernutrition can influence brain development directly by affecting brain structure and function, or indirectly via poor physical or motor development, in addition to other pathways.6 — 8 Exposure to
multiple co-occurring risks most likely contributes to greater disparities in developmental trajectories among
children with differential exposure.9 — 12 This paper focuses on associations between specific aspects
of children's physical environments — access to improved water and sanitation (W&S)-- and childhood development
as measured by performance on a test
of receptive language.

Even when study is limited to family processes
as influences, multivariate risk models find support.9 - 12 For example, Cummings and Davies13 presented a framework for how
multiple disruptions in
child and family functioning and related contexts are supported
as pertinent to associations between maternal depression and early
child adjustment, including problematic
parenting, marital conflict,
children's exposure to parental depression, and related difficulties in family processes.10, 11 A particular focus
of this family process model is identifying and distinguishing specific response processes in the
child (e.g., emotional insecurity; specific emotional, cognitive, behavioral or physiological responses) that, over time, account for normal development or the development
of psychopathology.10
