Auction Napa Valley, the world's most celebrated charity wine event, gets underway on June 1.
The
auction's «never before, never again» wine
lots were crafted by top vintners
from Sonoma County's 17 distinct AVA appellations, and offered in quantities of five, 10 or 20 cases.
At the end of the Live
Auction, the Gargiulos, along with honorary co-chairs David Duncan of Silver Oak and Twomey Cellars and his wife, Dr. Kary Duncan, took the stage to make an appeal for Fund - A-Need, the
lot that has no wine, no hospitality or trips associated with it — only the satisfaction that comes
from making a difference in the lives of children in need.
Presented by the Willamette Valley Wineries Association, the live
auction will offer 85 unique
lots from all six Willamette Valley sub-AVAs.
Sonoma County Barrel
Auction lots range in size
from five to 20 cases and include unique single vineyard bottlings, specific clonal selections, blends, wines aged using special barrel regimes and joint
lot wines made by collaborating wineries.

I remember always keeping an eye on
auction sales prices and was genuinely intrigued by the market and art world gossip, rather than feeling separated or alienated
from it, as I know a
lot of my contemporaries are.
Whether or not an individual
lot gets a special write - up in a catalogue usually impacts its sale value somewhat and it is a difficult task for the
auction houses to shy away
from hype or hyperbole while still offering interesting and pertinent information about the individual work of art.
Sotheby's France organized a photography
auction on May 15 that brought together 113
lots, ranging
from historical photographs, fashion work, modern and contemporary photography.
As a dedicated champion of California artists, LAMA established three new world
auction records for Southern California modernists: June Harwood's Untitled (

lots are by women artists, some significant works by women are for sale: «Roots,» a poignant color screen print by Catlett that the gallery says has not been seen at
auction in 20 years (shown above); «March on Washington,» 1964 (oil on canvas), a beautifully rendered painting by Alma Thomas (1891 - 1978); Faith Ringgold's 1974 «Night: Window of the Wedding 8,» touted as the first of her fabric paintings to be offered at
auction (shown below); and «Still Life with Grapefruit,» 1928, described on the frame backing as Lois Mailou Jones's first painting, completed a year after she graduated
from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
As a dedicated champion of California artists, LAMA is especially proud to have established new world
auction records for Southern California modernists: Mary Corse's Copper - Four Crosses (1979) realized $ 100,000, a John Lautner floor lamp (1939) brought $ 43,750 (
Lot 96), and a James Gill painting
from 1968, when the artist worked in Los Angeles, achieved $ 22,500.
Phillips held a 2010
auction titled «Africa» featuring 233
lots of contemporary art, photographs and editions by African artists and artists
from elsewhere whose subjects reflected the continent.
