Australian Government released a policy with the aim of preserving and promoting
Indigenous languages.
It is not merely an accident of
language that the appalling infant mortality and peri-natal morbidity rates for
Indigenous infants results in vastly disproportionate «hospital separations» today, and that the juvenile justice systems of Australia continue to separate
Indigenous children from their families at rates well beyond those for other
Australian children.

From the earliest days of European contact there was often an assumption that
Indigenous Australian languages were of less value than English and this view soon hardened into government policy, which was reinforced through education and employment practices.
