When the contract does
list the marketing services, they usually include only things the publisher (or its «marketing arm») can do in -
house — and that the writer can do more cheaply for himself or herself — for example, press releases and posts for the
author's and publisher's own social media channels.
The
list is endless, it is not only those ones that you
listed here; Companies like
Author House / Solutions, Xlibris, iUniverse, Trafford Publishing, Palibris,
Author House - UK, Word - clay and Balboa Press are to be avoided like the plague.
But I can guarantee this: unless you're an
author who has already hit a major bestseller
list and / or your book is the most important book being published by that traditional publishing
house's imprint and / or you got paid an advance of $ 50,000 or more (in small genres like sf or westerns) or $ 100,000 or more (in larger genres like romance and mystery), your book will not get a single title ad.
They could also coordinate the whole process as a service for their clientele, establishing a concrete
list of tangible services to promote the book, report and analyze sales, use their influence in the marketplace to get a better deal for the
author in the future with a traditional
house or a better deal through ebook publishers — while also managing subrights and the
author's career.
I'd like to see publishing
houses reducing their
lists and then being able to spend more money and time on few
authors with better results.
And if Random
House doesn't deeply discount big titles from bestselling
authors — but those titles stay at or near the top of bestseller
lists anyway — that will support the belief that readers are willing to pay a premium for books by certain
authors.
