Some cell nucleus detections correspond to background objects, arising from
autofluorescence and limitations
in image quality.
Without wounding, minimal
autofluorescence was observed
in the corneal endothelium (Figure 6A).
The fourth panel of the upper row shows tumor with no red NSCs
in mice treated with trastuzumab alone (sporadic small red dots not associated with cells are visible as
autofluorescence background).
FRET sensors face challenges of photobleaching,
autofluorescence, and,
in the case of exciting cyan - excitable donors, phototoxicity.
Future investigations using specialized, high - resolution
in vivo imaging tools, such as optical coherence tomography and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, will permit a much more detailed investigation into the source of the
autofluorescence.
Cell nuclei are shown

(D) Accumulation of autofluorescent material (green) within the RPE can also be seen
in a well preserved region of a 13 - year old Stage - 2 affected retina (arrow), possibly indicating that increased
autofluorescence may precede loss of photoreceptors.
