PLATFORM This section of 12 films, which
tends to focus on directors in early stages of their careers, is actually juried (though TIFF isn't known for
awards really outside of «People's Choice» which
tends to have a strong correlation to eventual Best Picture
nominations at the Oscars).
Director Tom Hooper, who's had such triumphs in recent years with both The King's Speech and Les Misérables, has over-indulged his leading man here, although it has to be said this type of big performance does
tend to secure
award nominations, particularly when the subject of gender confusion is involved.
Here are the Globe
nominations in all their glory and folly (it's always a combo of the two with any
awards body... though people
tend to be harsher on the Globes in this perception matter).
There's the usual crop of film
awards front - runners to be found here; in addition to the list above, there is also Michael Fassbender, Eddie Redmayne, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams and Kate Winslet, but one or two surprising omissions, especially The Martian, Jennifer Lawrence or indeed anyone from Joy (David O. Russell films have
tended to be garlanded with at least
nominations in the past).
Many of those atop the list were recognized with
nominations and, in many cases, major
awards, but such an extreme degree of public approval also
tends to invite additional scrutiny.
But historically, the Globes don't align with the Academy
Awards quite as well as D.G.A.
nominations, which
tend to identify key front - runners.
