There are four health
tests that are currently recommended by the HCA:
BAER (
hearing), CERF (an annual eye exam), patella (once after they are a year old) and hips (once after the dog is two years old).
However,
BAER (brainstem auditory evoked response)
testing is available and should be used by breeders to
test their breeding dogs for
hearing deficiencies prior to being bred.
For a number of years, many responsible Dalmatian breeders have screened their litters using
BAER testing to ascertain the
hearing status of the puppies in a litter.
If
BAER testing isn't readily available, you can do a home
test that may tell you if the puppy can
hear or not.
In addition to the four required
tests, OESCA recommends
testing and reporting cardiac screening,
BAER (
hearing)
testing, and DNA
tests for Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1 mutation), Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD), and Cerebellar Degeneration.

Unlike human
hearing tests,
BAER testing only determines whether an ear can
hear or not.
The
hearing test known as the brainstem auditory evoked response (
BAER) or brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) detects electrical activity in the cochlea and auditory pathways in the brain in much the same way that an antenna detects radio or TV signals or an EKG detects electrical activity of the heart.
If you suspect your dog can't
hear the
BAER test is the best way to be sure.

hearing status is to have its

Recognition of affected cases is often difficult, because unilaterally deaf dogs appear to
hear normally unless a special
test (the brainstem auditory evoked response,
BAER) is performed; facilities to perform the
BAER are usually only available at veterinary schools (see list).
