I primed it with two coats of
BIN shellac based primer which seals the piece and creates a surface for the new paint to adhere.

I have long been a fan of Zinsser's
BIN primer - sealer, which is not low - VOC (volatile organic compounds), because it is pigmented
shellac.
The reason for using
BIN over Kiltz is because the
BIN primer is
shellac based so it will dry quickly and has better stain blocking properties.

I can tell you that I would use
BIN 1 -2-3 solely because it is a pigmented white
shellac based primer.
To prevent them from bleeding through the paint, I used
BIN primer (a
shellac - based primer) to seal the knots.
