So, by ensuring that your
baby does not have to be
working hard to keep his head up and find support for his body, he can better focus on the task at hand — accepting the
spoon and successfully swallowing that bite.
I had to start solids for L recently at 16 weeks, he's a very hungry
baby but of course he's still too young to feed himself so he's fed from a
spoon, he loves it, gobbles up all of his
baby porridge, carrots, sweet potato etc I have no doubt that he will want to attempt this by himself as soon as he can but it's whatever
works best for us at the time, no wrong or right way!
This
works especially well if your
baby doesn't seem to like the
spoon.
In the meantime, keep your
baby skin - to - skin, hand express your colostrum (pumps don't
work as well in these first few days before your milk «comes in») and feed your
baby the colostrum with a small
spoon or a medicine dropper.
Whether you choose to stick strictly to
baby led weaning,
work with purees and
spoon feeding only, or combine the two, it's important to make a decision that meshes well with your lifestyle, the way you're raising your
baby, and your child's preferences too.
You can also try using Spuni, instead of a regular
spoon; it's specifically designed to
work with
baby's latching instinct, minimizing the mess.
Help your
baby learn to feed himself by trying to give him foods that stick easily to the
spoon — it's so sad to watch a
baby work hard to pick something up, only for it to roll off before it reaches his mouth!
You don't need to decide to choose one approach and stick to it, a combination of
spoon - led and
baby - led weaning
works really well.
I did this because I went back out to
work and the
baby sitter that I left her with was complaining of the difficulty of feeding her the breast milk by
spoon (she never took the breast milk in a bottle).
In this situation, solids may be started somewhat earlier than 6 months of age (say 4 or 5 months of age), so that by the time the mother is
working outside the home, the
baby can be getting most of her food and liquid off a
spoon when the mother is not with her.
Just
spoon your prepared
baby food on to a baking sheet to form little mounds (although please note that this won't
work as well if your purees are very runny).
That diagonal swoop prevents them from having to close and
work their upper lip (which is needed for the development of more complex feeding and speech skills) and is often associated with using a
spoon that has a bowl that's too deep for the
baby.
