Balanced Practice Tests provide an opportunity for teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders to experience the features of online testing and gain insight into how Smarter Balanced will assess students» mastery of the Common Core.
The tool now links directly to Smarter
Balanced Practice Tests with plans to connect to the Smarter Balanced Spanish web page and resources.
The Smarter
Balanced practice test to be released at the end of May and the Smarter Balanced field tests to be deployed in Spring 2014 will provide additional opportunities for schools to gain experience in deploying the assessments.

Balanced Practice Test and the Training Test provide students with a preview of test questions aligned to academic standards for grades 3 — 8 and high school in both English language arts / literacy and math.

practice appear to pick up different but complementary information that, combined, can provide a
balanced and accurate picture of teacher performance, according to research recently released from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
These were: well - being and welfare — insisting upon the adoption of well - being policies in all education settings; empowering and enabling — identifying the
balance between empowering and overburdening staff; freedom and flexibility - reversing the trend for
testing and increasingly structured curriculum frameworks and trust and train teachers to do their job with a focus on reflective
practice; and celebrating success — making sure we all better celebrate the amazing experiences and achievements of teachers to help stem a current tendency for public pessimism.
This model might provide a more
balanced approach, one where we are not constantly preparing for
tests with
practice tests and spending weeks on end
testing.
In October, President Obama announced a
Testing Action Plan, putting forward a set of principles and steps to restore
balance to America's classrooms, protecting the vital role that good assessments play in guiding progress for students while providing help in unwinding
practices that have burdened classroom time or not served students, educators, or families well.

Balanced, a consortium of states developing the new Common Core assessments, said he supports California's decision to give the field, or
practice,
test in the new standards to all students next spring, rather than limit the pilot to a small
test group as other states are doing.
Beyond elements of the
test design that will militate against the risk of cheating, the Smarter
Balanced test administration policies will call on states to conform to best
practices with regard to independent monitoring and proctoring.
These
practice tests will be freely available on the Smarter
Balanced web site (www.SmarterBalanced.org); they will utilize the same software system that is being used for the operational
test and will feature many of the tools, accommodations and accessibility features that will be included in the final software package.
Educators looked at the best existing
tests, as well as emerging, innovative
testing practices in order to create Smarter
Balanced assessments.
The Smarter
Balanced adaptive
test aims to provide educators with more authentic indicators of their students» college and career readiness, but some educators have found the
test's technology to be limiting and difficult; EdTech leader Steven Rasmussen even went so far as to say, «Not one of the
practice and training
test items is improved through the use of technology... The primitive software used only makes it more difficult for students and reduces the reliability of the resulting scores.»
The report will also feature a graphic that will show how a student's score compares with the average score on the «
practice» Smarter
Balanced tests in math and English language arts that students in California and other consortium states took last year.
Based on the
practice questions released by Smarter
Balanced and PARCC, others in education policy say they're confident that these
tests will be a marked improvement over the old
tests.

Balanced field
test, a
