the Best Documentary prize at the 5th American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
The Best Documentary prize was given to This Is Not a Film, which was also given a special award by the organization.
Their Best Documentary prize went to The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye by Marie Losier.
It also earned a Jury Prize at the Documentary Edge Festival in New Zealand and
the Best Documentary prize at the 5th American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
Julianne Moore won best actress for Still Alice and Citizenfour picked up a second
best documentary prize.
«Searching for Sugar Man» picked up
the Best Documentary prize and led to a massive resurgence in fortunes for its subject.

Best Documentary Feature; in the last five years, the ultimate winner of the
prize and a bulk of runners - up have played the fest.
The four top jury
prizes at Sundance 2010 were awarded Saturday night to Debra Granik's «Winter's Bone» for
best U. S. drama, Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington's «Restrepo» for U. S.
documentary, David Michôd's «Animal Kingdom» for world drama, and Mads Brügger's «The Red Chapel» for world
documentary.
Musician - driven
documentaries have fared
well at the Oscars in recent years, with «Searching for Sugar Man» winning the
documentary prize in 2013 and «Twenty Feet From Stardom» doing so in 2014.
Meanwhile, speaking after her Edward Snowden film «Citizenfour» won the
prize for
documentary, director Laura Poitras noted that Snowden and the movie sought to «expose a threat [not only] to our privacy but to our democracy itself,» as she was flanked by investigative reporter and film subject Glenn Greenwald, as
well as Snowden girlfriend Lindsay Mills.
The company's ascent up Hollywood's awards ladder began at the 2016 Academy Awards, where Brie Larson picked up the
best actress Oscar for Room, Amy was named
best documentary, and Ex Machina got the
prize for
best visual effects — all A24 films.
Other highlights from 2016 (and also must see films) have included the very informative and poignant
documentary, «Maya Angelou and Still I Rise,» by Rita Coburn Whack and Bob Hercules; Mick Jackson's «Denial,» the gripping Holocaust denial tale with compelling performances from Rachel Weisz and Timothy Spall; Paul Verhoeven's «Elle,» with its great Isabelle Huppert performance; the remarkably thoughtful sci - fi film, «Arrival,» by Denis Villeneuve; Tom Ford's «Nocturnal Animals,» with its outstanding performances from Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon; David Mackenzie's «Hell or High Water,» this summer's sleeper hit; Cristian Mungiu's «Graduation,» winner of the
Best Director
prize at Cannes; and Cristi Puiu's «Sieranevada,» winner of the top
prize at this year's Chicago International Film Festival.
«The Square,» Ruben Östlund's outrageous satire centered on the world of modern art, was named
Best Foreign Film; Pixar's «Coco» won the
prize for Animated Feature; and «Jane,» Brett Morgen's film focusing on the life and work of primatology scientist Jane Goodall, won the
Best Documentary award.
«Talya Lavie's Zero Motivation, a dark comedy about the life of Israel's female soldiers, took the jury
prize for
best narrative feature at the Tribeca Film Festival, while Marshall Curry's Point and Shoot, the account of a young American caught up in the Libyan Revolution, was named
best documentary feature.
This year, the
best narrative feature category sees 12 films battling it out for the prestigious
prize, while 12
documentaries from around the word will compete to be named
best documentary feature.

Documentary Festival, this is a film I saw twice on the big screen this past year (and was moved to tears both times, I proudly attest) and one that eloquently makes its case early in the film when an early Charley Patton recording is played and lands like lightning.
