Broadly speaking, it is probably true to say that the Church was more concerned to communicate the schema to the laity than the Bible itself; but in doing so it ensured that whatever of the
biblical material became available, either by direct reading, or through liturgy and offices, through
sermons, hymns or pictures, was seen in a well - defined perspective.
«At the center of
biblical faith,» says Walter Brueggemann in a
sermon on this passage, «is a command from God that curbs economic transactions by an act of communal sanity that restores everyone to proper place in the economy, because life in the community of faith does not consist of getting more but in sharing well.»
His
sermons are often little more than rearrangements of
biblical texts with a few connectives thrown in!
The best preachers, I have observed, are those who can see stories in everyday life and can tell them in
sermons, carefully linking up the contemporary story with the
biblical text.
Since the mere recitation of
Biblical passages does not suffice, these professionals require guidance as to how to move from text to

As an expression of the
biblical archetype that stands behind the civil religion let me turn to that great initial

Those who have had basic courses in the
biblical languages and are willing to devote 20 minutes a day to such language study should gain enough language ability to base their
sermon text study on the original text, and they should have enough linguistic skill to use the best of the great philological commentaries, which often cite words from the original languages.

We have come, then, to the unenviable position of having asserted that the absence of serious interpretation of the
Biblical text endangers the Christian character of the
sermon while the presence of such

sermon, and the unity essential to that movement, both qualities being requisites for maximum effectiveness.

2 Whatever the nature of this destination, it will be the fruit of preparation and lively engagement with the
Biblical text, it will be clear to the minister, and it will be the beginning point for the
sermon preparation proper.
The preacher who is doing his reading these days has been encouraged by the fact that there are a number of recent attempts «to find a new way through from exegesis to the
sermon».1 That these efforts among
biblical scholars, systematic theologians, and practical theologians are taking place has several clear implications.

Whether a
sermon deals with a
biblical theme, a social problem, a Christian doctrine, the world mission of the church, Christian family life, or a personal problem such as doubt, it will have meaning for the individual only if it touches one of his many areas of inner need.

These and other similar facts lead most
biblical scholars to say that Matthew, who likes to organize his materials topically, gives us more than a single
sermon.
Using
Biblical software can be a tremendous help for both individual Bible study, and preparing for
sermons, Small Groups, Sunday School, and the like.
Few
biblical scholars have taken seriously both feeding stories in Mark; similarly, how many
sermons have you heard on both stories, as a pair?
Every reviewer who criticises the Noah movie for not sticking to the literal
