When the bIlbe is nothing more than
stories of what men would like to see, one can see the errors of trying to be to
biblical.
The problem is not with
biblical Revelation, the problem is
when the Church or individuals within the Church interpret it as either a metaphysical treatise or a moral manual rather than the greatest Love
Story ever told.
However, we should not allow us to be totally seduced by this Victorian version of the season, and recall that in the
biblical stories, and in centuries past, this was a time
when the world turned upside down.
But
when reading the
biblical story of the exodus, it's best to forget this classic.
Beliefs are important, especially
when anchored in the retelling of
biblical stories — but beliefs in themselves are sterile.
Their hearts burn, they later say,
when Jesus expounds the
biblical story, but they do not really see who he is until they break bread together.
When, that is to say, it becomes the effort of
biblical theology to penetrate to the divine realities, forms, and intentions that have been temporally invested in reportorial forms available to the moment, it becomes the principal effort of systematic theology to interpret the
biblical story in amplest symbolic dimensions.
We also need to remember the
biblical stories and the times in the past
when God has worked on behalf of His people.
(In this century, scholars have analyzed
biblical literature to see what traces remain from the time
when the
stories and sayings were told before they were written.
But
when the historian correlates all the data, the
biblical stories carry no more weight than other materials.
So even if the
biblical account of the «guards at the tomb»
story is correct, the fact that there is a time period
when the tomb was left unguarded, blows a hole in the Christian claim that a resurrection is the best explanation for the empty tomb and the disciples» belief that Jesus had been resurrected.
But
when you decide which of those
stories to base your morals on, you're not using
biblical methods in order to do your deciding.
They become apparent
when Theo talks about his mother's «visitation» to him in dreams,
when Hobie speaks affectionately of the Catholic Church and the Jesuit priest who protected him as a youth,
when the otherwise cynical Boris admits to being moved to tears by
Biblical stories, and again
when Theo opens up to the higher purpose in life, despite all its difficulties and insanities, toward the end of the novel.
But
when the immense age of the earth became clearly evident on geological grounds, most fundamentalists tried to defend the «truth» of the
biblical story by interpreting the six days as six geological ages, thousands or even millions of years in length.
In the Middle Ages,
when most Christians were illiterate and lacked immediate access to Scripture, artists transmitted
biblical stories and theological truth through images that everyone could read.
The earliest affirmations of the Resurrection of Christ are already tinged with mythology, but were quite restrained
when compared with the Resurrection
stories soon to develop, and by the second century the trends already present in the
Biblical material had led to pure mythology, as in the Gospel of Peter.
The
biblical story of Onan relates that
when Onan's brother died, the Lord decreed that Onan must marry his brother's wife to carry on the family name.
When we dig deeper into the
Biblical stories, we begin to see that they don't just describe a political context, but present political proposals.

when he first decided to return to work there were no projects that interested him, before he ended up working back - to - back on four films including the
biblical story, and Lynne Ramsay's new film You Were Never Really Here.
Among them: an administrator called meetings to decide what to do about students wearing Confederate flag apparel; a principal banned the student newspaper from covering a controversial issue, only relenting
when the local media reported the
story; and a student Bible group, prohibited from distributing fliers on campus unless the word prayer and any
Biblical quotations were eliminated from the flier, filed suit against a principal.

The fact that it's a twist on the Noah's Ark
story doesn't hurt either; L'Engle is at her best
when she's working with
biblical themes.
A problem could arise with
biblical literalists, but one could address that by suggesting that some fictional
stories have great value in teaching some lesson or illuminating some aspect of the «human (or other sentient being) condition», and also address actual historical events in the translation of the bible — or one could be more abbrassive and ask «do you believe deaf people can't be saved» (see one of Paul's letters, and the history of the Catholic Church)-- oh, you don't — so
when you said you were a literalist, you were speaking figuratively?»

when King Solomon told the women that he would solve the problem by cutting the child in half and awarding each of them half, the fake mother stood silent while the real mother relented and said «no, let her have the child», thereby demonstrating to the King who the true mother was.
