It is thought to be a result of mixing the now extinct
Bichon Tenerife and the Poodle, resulting in what is also known as the Havana Silk Dog because of its luxurious coat.

Eventually, as trade routes expanded and countries changed hands, the
Tenerife Terrier traveled to the Continent and evolved into the
Bichon Frisé of today.
The
Bichon Frise is one of the four modern breeds that include the
Tenerife, Bolognese, Maltese, and Havanese.
Ship's logs of the early sixteenth century reveal that dogs were brought along on these early colonists» voyages, and logic tells us they were most likely the dog of
Tenerife, common ancestor to all the
Bichon family.
Don't be fooled by the name — the
Bichon Frise is thought to have roots in
Tenerife, having descended from the Water Spaniel.
The Havanese descends from the same ancestor as the entire
Bichon family, the
Tenerife.
