«Hispanic women are far more likely to have a family member who
breastfed than white or
black mothers.»
«We found that higher rates of poverty and lower levels of education helped explain
breastfeeding gaps between
black and white women, especially in determining whether
mothers started
breastfeeding in the first place,» said Sharon Landesman Ramey, a professor and distinguished research scholar at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute and an author of the paper.
The results not only explained some of the
breastfeeding gap between
black and white
mothers, but they also elucidated why Hispanic
mothers have the highest
breastfeeding rate.
Black mothers were less likely to have a family history of
breastfeeding and were also less likely to live with the baby's father.
«Hispanic
mothers were much more likely to have a family member who
breastfed than white or
black mothers,» said Chelsea McKinney, researcher at the NorthShore University Health System and lead author on the project.

mothers consistently have some of the highest
breastfeeding rates in the US.
«
Breastfeeding gaps between white,
black, and Hispanic
mothers in the US.»
White
mothers were significantly less likely to experience in - hospital formula introduction than
black mothers, which was the biggest predictor of
breastfeeding duration.

black and white
mothers are not fully explained by differences in poverty and education.
