While it is clear that online and
blended learning is becoming a norm for educators, it is also critical that we embrace this
learning model with a demand for quality and
innovation.
Blended learning, like all new
innovations, needs time for iterative improvement.
As Heather Staker and I have written, the models of
blended learning most likely to scale into the core academic subjects at all levels of schooling in the near term are sustaining
innovations, in which online
learning is essentially an augmentation to the traditional classroom, but there is still a fundamental shift in the
learning model from the student's perspective.

innovation broadly, and provides funding for states and districts to implement personalized,
blended, and online

learning products and services,

learning schools, and the like.
To build the agenda we used our
Blended Learning Universe to recruit innovative school leaders and educators to share their tactics and practices at the cutting edge of school
innovation.
During the last decade, we've documented how online
learning — often in the form of
blended learning — is an
innovation with disruptive potential to transform our antiquated, seat - time - based education system.
And the pace of
innovation with
blended learning is picking up within school districts nationwide.
Although this form of
blended learning may not yet seem to have transformative potential in the broader education system, the theory of disruptive
innovation suggests that it eventually will.

Does that mean that all
blended learning is a sustaining
innovation?
In contrast, many district schools first used
blended learning in the classic areas of nonconsumption in which disruptive
innovations typically start, where the alternative was nothing at all.
In recent years, alternative school programs have proven to be fertile ground for
innovation, particularly when it comes to adopting
blended learning to better personalize instruction.
If Korea uses its famed skill of rapidly adopting new trends and ideas to scale
innovations like the flipped classrooms in Busan about which I have written and other forms of
blended learning that escape the factory - model of education, then perhaps some praise from President Obama would be well deserved.
