But first, we discuss how she
broke into the business despite having no encouragement from her parents at the time; why she loves to go on auditions even if the prospect of getting work is hopeless; her time
in The Groundlings and how it led to having the part of Rita
in the
movie smash Bridesmaids (written for her by fellow Groundlings Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo); as
well as taking on a real - life dramatic role
in the upcoming Felt, the story of infamous Watergate «Deep Throat» Mark Felt — played, she says sensationally, by Liam Neeson.
It's a feel -
good movie, completely formulaic, with a shoddy script that hardly merits making a
movie out of, but it's like a pair of comfortable shoes, worn and
broken -
in, but fitting quite
well.
Starring Martin Sheen
in his mid-life renaissance (he was going gangbusters
in TV
movies and short - lived series, and kept trying to
break back into films, scoring, at
best, supporting roles
in a couple Stephen King adaptations (Firestarter and The Dead Zone) before securing the lead
in 1987's The Believers.
Rather, it remains, for
better and worse, a high - gloss prison -
break movie in reverse, one that every so often raises a thorny moral dilemma (primarily with regard to the consequences of John's reckless plan on his son, who could potentially be orphaned by the scheme's failure), but never to the detriment of its no - nonsense, moderately energized B -
movie kicks.
Official Premise: Winner of 6 Academy Awards ® including
Best Director for writer / director Damien Chazelle, and winner of a record -
breaking 7 Golden Globe ® Awards, LA LA LAND is more than the most acclaimed
movie of the year — it's a cinematic treasure for the ages that you'll fall
in love with again and again.
David Lynch's Mulholland Drive contends that the answer to the eternal struggle between what is real and what is fantasy comes
in the form of a Keatsian confusion — it's the difference between Adam's dream and Eve rendered flesh, blurred
in the mind of the creator and his audience.A film is a dream of the director made tangible, a conceit familiar from the fourth wall -
breaking in Ingmar Bergman's Persona (banishing any mystery there might have been regarding the visual references to that film
in Lynch's piece), and a
movie's characters therefore become projections of its maker's sublimated longing (clarifying too the auteur's use of wardrobe and colour schemes from Hitchcock's meditation on objectification, Vertigo, as
well as those of his first collaboration with inamorata Tippi Hedren, The Birds).
The
movie quickly settles into the
well - covered terrain of most road
movies — the friction that comes with putting humans
in confined spaces for long hours, especially when the RV
breaks down.
The
movie's only ambition is to make viewers enjoy being uneasy, and by that standard «
Breaking In» could be called some kind of a
good movie.
Best Actress: Annette Bening — Kids Are All Right — stern, intelligent yet moving and likeable — it takes a real pro to accomplish that with such style and verve Nicole Kidman — Rabbit Hole — heartbreaking but resilient — a perfect balance between
broken and fixed — it is so joyful to watch a character so succinctly communicated Lesley Manville — Another Year — heartbreaking with closeup after closeup of vulnerability and grasping hope — truly a fragile and pulsating performance Julianne Moore — Kids Are All Right — courageous and oh so human — sexy and vulnerable
in an earthy way — her struggles with herself are the heart of the
movie and she carries it magnificently and warmly Natalie Portman — Black Swan — the tour de force this year — the crazy, emotionally volatile core of a crazy, emotionally volatile film — some wonder if it might be «easer» to play such big emotions but the incredibly thin wire she has to traverse
in such an extreme environment is daunting and she makes it work and gives us believability and solicits true sympathy
in the middle of a fright fest — a truly accomplished achievement
The
movie is great fun and involves one of the
best break up scenes ever to be seen
in film.
