films or books — it can be fun to make one's own
list of the variations, including, sometimes, completely different words.
You might not expect a serious political website to cite a blood - bathed action
film written by the directors of the Matrix at the top of its

British politics that it would be unwise to dismiss.

film is the
British - produced mountaineering thriller Everest, featuring Anglo - American glamour in the shape of Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley and Josh Brolin; its competition strand has an impressive
list of international auteurs, including Tom Hooper (The Danish Girl), Alexander Sokurov (Francofonia), Luca Guadagnino (A Bigger Splash) and Charlie Kaufman (Anomalisa); and a number of authentic coups, including the world premiere screening of Black Mass, the much - hyped gangster
film featuring Johnny Depp as James «Whitey» Bulger, and a first look at Beasts of No Nation, the African - set war thriller that represents Netflix's most serious shot yet across Hollywood's bows.
As far as snubs go, I was disappointed to see that my personal favourite of the year, Armando Iannucci's The Death of Stalin, was not on the best
film list as well as best
British film.
The Observer has just assembled one of the more interesting
lists I've seen in some time — a collective of the 25 best
British films of the last quarter - century, compiled from the votes of over 60 critics,
film professionals and assorted outside voices, ranging from Ben Kingsley to Peter Morgan to our friend Anne Thompson.
High Fidelity, Chicken Run, dirty pretty things, children of men (again 1 of my favorites), united 93 might also be called
British films and some might claim a place on that
list.

films are having a difficult time wrapping their tastes — and minds — around this new one.

list of the best
films of the year is out for 2017 and we only have to make it down to No. 2 on the
list to take issue; securing the runner - up slot right after top - ranked «Get Out» is «Twin Peaks: The Return.»
There's been a backlash against these
films in recent years (partly levelled at the public school, Oxbridge provenance of the filmmakers), but the fact that most of them ride high on this
list suggests they're still credited with initiating a new age of storytelling in
British cinema, both in terms of the range, social and geographical, of subjects and a style of filmmaking that honours realism above all else.
Starting our
list off is the wonderful, timeless classic
British film, 1970's The Railway Children.
It was
listed as one of critics» best
films of 2016 in Sight & Sound, a monthly
film magazine published by the
British Film Institute (BFI).
In his documentary
film the return of the real (2005), which was short -
listed for the 2006 Turner Prize,
British artist Phil Collins invited former guests on talk and makeover shows who felt their lives had been ruined by the appearances to tell their stories at a press conference he set up in Turkey.
Last year Richard Wilson RA's Hang on a Minute Lads... I've Got a Great Idea, a replica coach inspired by 1969
British heist
film The Italian Job, teetered on the edge of the hotel's seventh floor Grade I -
