Well, United is the one leaving me in the cold there, as

In order to upgrade
using Avios there simply has to be
Business Class award availability on the flight in question....
Although United devalued their
award chart while I was «on the treadmill» racking up points & miles, and
business class awards on partner airlines went from 100k to 140k round - trip I still felt it was a good
use of points.
And the KrisFlyer
award chart has some excellent values on United in first and
business classes that beat United's own
award levels, so you can see why
using Singapore rather United may make perfect sense.
Even if you're
using Alaska Mileage Plan miles you can't beat JAL's value in
Business Class (Milage Plan charges 110,000 miles for a roundtrip
Business Class award)....
I felt that I could still redeem my miles for domestic flights and certain
business class awards at reasonable rates while
using other means to earn and redeem
awards with partners like Lufthansa and Singapore.
