¶ The governing board of Glendale
Water and Power, a
California municipal
utility, last week halted plans for a 310 - MW natural gas plant to explore renewable energy and storage options instead.
That growth comes with responsibilities, including the important task of ensuring the people of our state can continue to rely on the
water and energy supplies and services that
utilities in
California provide.
The state's
water and wastewater
utilities consume large amounts of electricity to pump, treat, transport, and deliver
water — and their energy requirements are expected to keep growing as
California responds to increasingly severe drought.
In July,
California municipal
utility Glendale
Water & Power (GWP) connected a 2MW / 950kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at an electrical substation, designed to be able to regulate the transmission network and balance load, but also capable of providing black starts to generators on its network that have gone offline in unscheduled events.
The results for 2008 shouldn't be too much of a surprise: the most solar integrated

California's PG&E, its 85 MW of new solar capacity blowing the competition out of the

water sector.
By any measure, the current
California drought is severe, to the degree that Governor Brown made an emergency drought declaration almost a year ago, state and federal
water agencies have been forced to greatly cut back deliveries of
water to cities and farms from dangerously depleted rivers and reservoirs, and local
utilities are asking customers for a mix of voluntary and sometimes mandatory
water - use reductions.
