Calvary which Fox Searchlight picked up, German drama Wetlands, Jake Paltrow's sci - fi western Young Ones, Jim Mickle's Cold in July, bedtime horror The Babadook that some said is the best of the fest, Mark Duplass & Elisabeth Moss in The One I Love, Jenny Slate in Obvious Child, A.J. Edwards» Lincoln film The Better Angels, plus the highly praised closing night film They Came Together, not to mention the Audience Award winning doc Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory.
Don't get me wrong, I hated last years War on Everyone but
Calvary was a work of genius and I found he got the tonal shifts in that film absolutely spot on.
Like his brother, John Michael,
did after delivering laughs with The Guard, he followed it up with a more serious tone in
Calvary and it was a magnificent change of direction.

Calvary has many reasons to see it, even if the sum total of its quality elements
do not help it transcend its flaws.
Despite being one of the most successful indies in its native UK (it beat out Mr. Turner,
Calvary and The Imitation Game, all films with a much higher profile, for the British Independent Film Award), and a decent theatrical release, I don't feel Pride got much love stateside.
On immediate reflection, not only
do I wish to re-watch
Calvary soon but I believe it will prove as much of a necessary watch for at least one generation to come as it will be a gripping, funny and moving one for audiences this year.
