This case study illustrates how Sunderland
Carers Centre (the provider of
Independent Support in Sunderland) has built on existing relationships with the local authority, the local NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, the Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Disability Parent
Carer Forum, and the SEN Parent Partnership Service (now the SEN and Disability Information, Advice and
Support Service - SENDIASS).
They need lots of
support from their parents and
carers, as they move between being
independent and needing
support and comfort.
The recommendations include: recognition that
support needs for
carers of non-looked after children are often the same as when the children are looked after; improved respite care; improved practical and emotional
support, including counselling, for
carers and children; assistance with maintaining or establishing
support groups; training for practitioners working with kinship
carers; access to clear and easy information and
independent advice; and no barriers to family and friends care if it is in the best interests of the child.
Even the most experienced of foster
carers face new challenges and need
support and
independent advice from time to time.
Fostering services: National Minimum Standards NMS 22.12 states: «During an investigation the fostering service makes
support, which is
independent of the fostering service, available to the person subject to the allegation and, where this is a foster
carer, to their household, in order to provide: Information and advice about the process Emotional
support, and If needed, mediation between the foster
carer and the fostering service and / or advocacy (including attendance at meetings and panel hearings)»

FosterTalk is a not - for - profit leading provider of
independent support for foster
carers in the UK.

We listen to our partners and work closely with them to provide foster
carers with a joined up approach between the agency they work for and the
independent support they receive in FosterTalk.
