The promotion the trad pubs take
care of is the catalog and
sales force to get your
books into the brick and mortar distribution channel, which indies don't worry
about.
Traditional publishers complain
about this, but honestly don't
care much because they are moving from a nasty returns system in paper
books that allowed a 4 % profit to a new system that gives them upwards of 40 % profit margins in electronic
sales.

Assuming what people thinks makes any difference — I've seen estimates that this thing may have cost Amazon something like 5 - 10 % of
book sales among certain demographics who don't like what Amazon is doing, which is not nothing, if not exactly crippling — if Hachette is standing on the «we
care about authors» moral high ground, Amazon is pretty much duty bound to point out why they are the ones who should be viewed as the Author's Friend.
They don't
care about love for a
book, only
sales.
