Despite the efforts
of a strong ensemble
cast — featuring Bruce Dern, John Ortiz, Ellen Burstyn, Nick Offerman, Jon Hamm, Catherine Keener and Patton Oswalt — the
film fails to drive home its point,
about the power
of the stuff we leave behind when we die, with the same emotional punch that the people on - screen seem to be telegraphing: grief, longing, regret, resentment and sundry other flavors
of moroseness.
Throughout the
film there are several cinematic camera tricks, which hit the mark
about half the time (and are annoying the other half), and overall the performances
of the
cast are good, though I thought that the cheerleader's portrayal was a bit uneven, perhaps due to the script that had her alternatevely playing hot and cold.
But the dazzle
of the
cast and the targeted in - jokes never take away from the
film's core messaging
about the importance
of believing in one's own ability as an artist.
Even if the
casting choices in portraying some
of iconic talents in Kenney's orbit are occasionally questionable — a detail the
film gleefully acknowledges — there's something delightful
about watching actors known for comedy now try to capture the sound or energy
of the performers who inspired them.
The most impressive thing
about this
film of The Seagull is that every role has been ideally
cast.
You're not going to learn much
about the making
of the
film, because this commentary is all
about the
cast enjoying themselves and reliving favourite moments in the
