Catholic Church rejects nothing of what is true and holy in [other] religions»
has often been missed by Catholics
on both
sides of the ecclesial aisle.

have reached an age of reasoning» and remarks, «The Church might want to rethink that.»

would never think of wearing my religion
on my sleeve and kneeling in the middle of the
side walk to say the Lord's Prayer.

side, the party of continuity is «the
Catholic center,» or simply «the
Catholic Church,» which «remains the continuing community to which Jesus promised he
would send the Spirit, and the Spirit will lead us into, and keep us in, the truth....
Those who come from other ecclesial communities and enter into full communion with the
Catholic Church encounter great joy among some Catholics that they
have, not to put too fine a point
on it, «come over to our
side.»
Since its publication, «The Gift of Salvation» (First Things, January), of which we along with other Evangelical and Roman
Catholic theologians were signatories,
has garnered much attention
on both
sides of this historic confessional divide.
As news of Archbishop Dolan's precedent - shattering election as president of the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops ricochets around the
Catholic blogosphere, pundits
on all
sides are
having their say, and more comments and analyses are sure to follow.
In a striking leader by its editor, the excellent Luke Coppen, the Herald encouraged its readers «to hold the Corporation to account, notably for the blundering and reckless coverage of the affair
on the BBC's website» and urged the BBC's director general, Mark Thompson (himself a practicing
Catholic) «to trawl through the archives of BBC News Online tosee how ignorant and one -
sided reports of «Muslim outrage» helped manufacture a crisis for the Church that
has endangered the lives of Catholics».
At least some Republicans of conscience tried to urge their political brethren to choose a plausible, competent alternative to a narcissistic vulgarian; I haven't heard anything analogous
on the other
side of the aisle, and the seemingly tongue - tied
Catholic Democrats in the blogosphere are no exception to that default.
While most of his books since his move to that liberal aerie
have dealt with American history, he
has also joined the culture wars now raging inside the
Catholic Church, and very much
on the liberal
side.
Convergence ecumenism, insofar as it is understood as including Roman Catholics (and not just the Protestants and Orthodox who
had organized the World Council of Churches in 1948), was in its beginnings when I encountered it, Those who were open to it were few in number and,
on the Roman
Catholic side, were suspect by church authorities.
Our objection
would be that the
Catholic side of the argument in section 3,
on marriage and family life, is woefully inadequate, and that the non-
Catholic side is presented with unacknowledged quasi-relativist assumptions which are profoundly opposed to
Catholic thinking and formation.

Catholic's
have been
on the right
side of scientific discovery for over a thousand years.
It
has been a few years and I
have worked throught the
Catholic guilt thing and now that I am
on this
side it is bright, shiny and full of God's Love.

side is the story told by another

has been intimately involved in Anglican relations.
I expected that some people
would not understand or
would disagree with my argument, but I did not expect the warm and genuinely excited reactions from those whose own experience
has led them to see Christ
on the other
side of the long border between contemporary

So it seems the
Catholic Church (and Christianity more broadly — many other churches
have issued even stronger endorsements of internationalism) is
on the
side of history, baptizing the post-national future.
