Celibacy by Johann Adam Mohler, I was delighted to note the attention Murphy pays to his thinking.

Fertility levels were influenced
by many factors other than age at marriage and
celibacy levels.

celibacy with Christ and his loving.
How much less likely are gays and lesbians to remain celibate when
celibacy is imposed on them
by others?
Cardinal Stickler in his The Case for Clerical
Celibacy (first published 1993, English edition Ignatius, 1995) summed up the crisis as not only priests renouncing their ministry and fewer vocations but also a «profound secularization»
by many who stay in active ministry (p. 85).
The church tries to get around the issue
by attempting to somehow separate the individual from who they are and thereby maintain the right to openly condemn them and / or seek to impose a life of
celibacy and deny them the same rights of love, marriage, and family they themselves enjoy.
Recent scholarly studies such as
by Stickler, Cholij and Cochini have reopened the debate about the origins of priestly
celibacy, arguing that the Eastern practice is not ancient but an accommodation to lapses among married clergy.
We would expect to see greater levels of abuse amongst groups in which
celibacy is a normal way of life (such as Catholic priests), and
by extension lower levels of abuse in groups in which
celibacy is unusual.
There were three types of Man described: ones who chose
celibacy to dedicate themselves to God's service, such as monks, priests, or nuns; those castrated
by others, these are traditional eunuchs; and those who were «born that way.»
Though Protestant ethics supports marriage for clergy, still
celibacy must not be despised any more than marriage
by any Christian body.
Moreover, they claim that
celibacy was never really essential to being a priest but was a later addition imposed
by the Church.
Celibacy is not simply the absence of sex but a spiritual discipline,
by which we learn to place God, sex, and Christian community in the right perspective and understand the value of controlling sexual desires.
I do not know what to make of the fact that the discussion of the fulfillment of the human person through being joined with a person of the opposite sex in marriage is not followed
by a discussion of
celibacy.
By properly defining

by pointing to the relationship they prefigure: the union of Christ and the church.
Celibacy being poorly handled
by a few priests?
This is why any suggestion that Humanae Vitae is still valid, or that
celibacy for the priesthood still makes sense, or that handing out condoms might not be the best way of combating AIDS, is treated not just with contempt but with thinly disguised rage, not only
by self - confessed secularists but
by nominally Catholic journals such as The Tablet.
