A few days ago I was playing the new Sonic Mania and revisiting the joys of
Chemical Plant Zone when I faltered and had to race to the top of the flooded chamber before Sonic's air ran out.

So far, Flying Battery (from Sonic & Knuckles) Green Hill (from Sonic 1)
Chemical Plant Zone (from Sonic 2) and Stardust Speedway (from Sonic CD) are the only re-imagined zones so far.
Another classic Sonic stage is making its way to Sonic Mania in the form of a remixed
Chemical Plant Zone.
At the end of the tried and true
Chemical Plant Zone, Sonic is dropped into a game of Mean Bean Machine against Eggman!
The majority of the game is brand new courses on classic levels, such as Green Hill Zone and the almighty
Chemical Plant Zone (some of us loved it, Scully).
«Every classic level has something new in Act 2,» Webber told me as I fired up the second Act of the classic
Chemical Plant Zone.
For example, in
Chemical Plant Zone you interact with giant vats of chemicals and goo to create high jump or low friction gels (think Portal 2 here).

The new isometric areas can be seen in the new Space Port video which we've embedded below, showcasing the game's 3D take on the classic
Chemical Plant Zone from Sonic 2 (and Sonic Mania).
For all intents and purposes, the latter parts of these returning stages, such as Green Hill Zone,
Chemical Plant Zone and Oil Ocean Zone, are completely new experiences.
The new version of
Chemical Plant Zone brings a whole host of new gimmicks with it.

I actually laughed out loud the first time I got to
the Chemical Plant Zone Act 2 boss.
Speaking of special side quests, oh boy, that boss at
Chemical Plant Zone Act 2 was hilariously amazing.
Not exact matches
When grown in TNT - laden areas, which include old mines, waste sites, and military conflict
zones,
plants absorb and remove the toxic
chemicals from the soil through their roots in a process known as remediation.
Eight
Zones feature «remixed» levels from past games, such as Green Hill from the original Sonic the Hedgehog or
Chemical Plant from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Other
Zones include a trip to the
Chemical Plant, Stardust Speedway, Studiopolis
Zone, and Mirage Station as well.
Luckily, this is only in two parts of the game —
Chemical Plant, where you go under the pink water, and the return of the Hydrocity
Zone, which I will admit, is probably the best underwater Sonic level — but still, underwater levels and Sonic do not mix well.
There's
zones designed purely for speed (
Chemical Plant),
zones designed to piss you off even as you're jamming to the BGM (Mystic Cave), and
zones that shouldn't have gotten past the concept stage (Metropolis).
And the pleasure of playing with classic Sonic in the Green Hill
Zone and in the
Chemical Plant... Such a nostalgia!

Zone — and even the frustration of repeatedly drowning in Mega Mack in the revamped
Chemical Plant from Sonic 2 (tip: play it as Knuckles)-- will scratch you gently in the nostalgia.
