As the two largest current global emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs), it is imperative that the United States and
China work together to support effective domestic energy and
climate change programs and an effective international
climate regime.
During my chairmanship of the Western Governors» Association, we focused specifically on the global nature of
climate change,
working directly with
China and other major carbon emitters on this critical issue.
«I am expecting a useful meeting but we don't have anything in the
works of the kind that we were involved with in
China,» Todd Stern, the State Department
climate change envoy, said.
With concerted effort, the United States and
China can
work with the 111 countries already committed to a phase - down under the Montreal Protocol, to slow
climate change and sea level rise, as well as prevent the world from reaching irreversible climatic «tipping points.»
