Sotheby's have added an evening
sale to Asia Week New York for The Chew Family Collection of
Chinese Paintings & Calligraphy.
Artprice (March, 2016) notes that
sale of drawings is booming along with
Chinese art market among other factors, such as the scarcity of the Old Masters»
paintings which is therefore being replaced by their drawings (thus increasing the total category of drawings); and the truth that drawings are no longer less valuable than
paintings (drawings now represent 24 % of the global turnover of the market).
The director, who has been quietly buying and selling for years, even made a rare personal appearance on the Christie's floor the day before the auction to be seen with the five
Chinese contemporary
paintings he had put up for
sale.
We'd like to highlight one lot from Sotheby's
sale of Fine Classical
Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy.
Record prices include the $ 1.23 million
sale of an album of
paintings and calligraphy by renowned modern
Chinese artists including Zhang Daqian and Wang Yachen.
During four days of
sales at Sotheby's Hong Kong, the predominantly Asian buyers spent $ 106 million (excluding watches) on
Chinese jade, porcelain, Imperial accessories and ink brushwork
paintings.
Some of the most high profile
sales include two abstract
paintings by Atsuko Tanaka sold by Hauser & Wirth for prices between USD400, 000 and USD600, 000, a vintage Sean Scully sold by ShanghART for USD850, 000 and a pair of large Neo Rauch
paintings, each for about USD1 million, sold by David Zwirner to
Chinese clients.
