It messed up Christmas, I was supposed to get him an android retro half ass

console bullshit thing for all
games, wii party u, mario 3d world AND DK, got every last one except DK, got him Mario and Sonic at the Sochi olympics instead, which turned out to be good, but not exactly your traditional Nintendo
game, it really shouldn't take so long for a DK platformer, I mean geez, Retro might as well be developing
on retro development kits at this rate
My thoughts are that this is a good attempt but at the end of the day there is no room for a big
console market in the
Chinese games industry, I can see people buying products like this as an android streaming box but then in that case there are plenty of other products from Xiaomi and Tencent which are cheaper and do a better job
on the media side.
It all comes down to the fact that the living room gaming experience just isn't convenient for most
Chinese gamers and with no familiar
games on the
consoles it means that they'd much rather stick to what they know.
Publishing
games on Android, PC or
console already requires a
Chinese publishing partner and they could also be required to launch foreign iOS
games as well if China are strict about this new regulation, thus closing the loophole.
If you read my article
on console games in China you'd know that they too have to be in Simplified
Chinese in order to receive an official release in China, but I personally I can't recall a time when they were so strict as to block a
game from going
on sale for having English text in the
game.
Instead they plan to win over consumers through AAA
games that can't be found
on other
Chinese consoles and through a good selection of
Chinese games at a low price that Sony and Microsoft can not offer.
These micro
consoles may have the same
games as mobile and PC and be familiar to
Chinese users, they are also considerably cheaper than a PS4, but the demand for living room gaming just isn't there and as such it's the TV streaming functionality that gets used more
on these boxes.
Censorship is imposed
on foreign
games which means that a lot of popular
console games in the West, like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, are banned
on console in China due to going against
Chinese cultural values.
The good news however is that
gamers can simply import the Asian version, Japanese version or English version to play
on their region free
Chinese consoles but that's not going to be that simple or a valid option for the average
gamer who will want the simplicity of buying the
game in their own language like they can do
on Mobile or PC.
It'll also be great to bring these
games overseas so that Western
gamers can experience what
Chinese developers are working
on and whilst the majority of
games are not AAA quality it is a start for China's
console games industry.
It's become increasingly clear that both Sony and Microsoft need local
Chinese games on their system to improve the desirability of
consoles in China, and also because they will have higher chances of approval and lower associated costs.
It's a similar strategy to Tencent's
console which aims to bring over
Chinese gamers by providing them with familiar
Chinese gaming experiences
on the
console.
Local
Chinese games on PlayStation 4 will increase consumer awareness in China and the lower price of the
console at that time will drive additional sell through so
gamers can play these familiar feeling
games as well as experience new Western style AAA
games that they don't usually play
on PC / Mobile.

The
console market has remained untapped in China for a very long time but it's ultimately going to be
Chinese gamers that decide if they're willing to change their gaming habits from playing
on Mobile & PC to buying new
games hardware and software to play at home.
