The
whole church needs help in avoiding the depersonalization of God
as we seek to overcome the limitations imposed on our
Christian experience by male - oriented language.

as we are, moreover, into a historical consciousness that has unveiled a
whole new world of New Testament thought and imagery, a world that is subject neither to theological systemization nor to translation into modern thought and

Christian vision that has openly or consistently accepted a totally fallen time and space
as the paradoxical presence of eternity; (5) he stands alone among
Christian artists in identifying the actual passion of sex
as the most immediate epiphany of either a demonic or a redemptive «Energy,» just
as he is the only
Christian visionary who has envisioned the universal role of the female
as both a redemptive and a destructive power; (6) his is the only
Christian vision of the total kenotic movement of God or the Godhead; (7) he was the first
Christian «atheist,» the first to unveil God
as Satan; (8) he is the most Christocentric of
Christian seers and artists; (9) only Blake has created a
Christian vision of the full identity of Jesus with the individual human being (the «minute particular»); and (10)
as the sole creator of a post-biblical
Christian apocalypse, he has given Christendom its only vision of a total cosmic reversal of history.
The
Christian will affirm that at any given moment the natural world
as a
whole is gathered into the
experience of a single ongoing Life, a divine Self, who feels the
whole, «declaring it good,» or at least potentially so, both in its particulars and in its complex unity.
I understand that every interaction you have with someone with a «
Christian» label on themselves will shape your view of Christianity
as a
whole, but I would encourage you to keep in mind that the negative
experiences often aren't representative of the
whole, and that they will be much more memorable to you than perhaps dozens of interactions you have had with
Christians who treated you well.
Yet either some break with sin in fact
as well
as in principle is possible or else the
whole of
Christian experience is a delusion.
The
whole force of the
Christian religion, therefore, so far
as belief in the divine personages determines the prevalent attitude of the believer, is in general exerted by the instrumentality of pure ideas, of which nothing in the individual's past
experience directly serves
as a model.
Paul also indicates that, just
as the individual
Christian will
experience the resurrection of the body, so the
whole creation will be purged of evil and decay and injustice, and will
experience total transformation (Rom.
But, unlike the first approach, which viewed all religions through the window of the Jewish -
Christian tradition, Wach insisted that Judaism and Christianity alike must be seen
as parts of the «
whole» religious
experience of the human race.
Thus, too, Christendom has known the most terrible guilt in history, and
as a religious Christianity has progressively and ever more fully reversed the movement of the Incarnation, the
Christian God has increasingly become alien and abstract, until in our own time he has only been present and real in actual
experience in a totally alien form, and the
whole body of Western humanity has been initiated into a radical and total state of guilt.
In my
experience teaching
Christians in their twenties and thirties (some who grew up in church, and others who did not), I have discovered that though they may be familiar with certain Bible stories, they are not always sure how the stories fit together into the Bible
as a
whole.
Again, the insistence on the societal nature of the world, and on man's genuine participation since he himself is organic to that world, illuminates the
Christian belief that man belongs to the creation and that the
whole natural order,
as well
as human history and personal
experience, is integral to the purpose of God.
Or the
Christian thing may be construed
as a total interpretation of reality or of the
whole of
experience, something like a body of theory that gives, at least in principle, a single unified explanation of everything.
I seriously doubt (based on my own
experience on the Dark Side of the Editorial Desk) that any statistical conclusions that could be drawn from the industry
as a
whole would mean anything in evaluating distinct subsets like, say,
Christian - oriented fiction.
